Railway network electrification
One line
PIB reported that about 99.2% of the Indian Railways network had been electrified by November 2025.
Summary
Electric traction can improve energy efficiency and reduce direct diesel use. Its climate benefit depends on the electricity mix, grid reliability, locomotive utilisation, and lifecycle costs.
PYQ pattern
UPSC connects transport infrastructure with energy security, emissions, logistics, and public investment. See the official UPSC question-paper archive.
Core notes
- PIB compared an electrification pace of 1.42 km per day in 2004-14 with more than 15 km per day during 2019-25.
- Railway solar capacity reached 898 MW by November 2025.
- Route electrification is an infrastructure output. Lower emissions and operating costs must be measured separately.
Prelims lens
- Electric locomotives draw power from traction infrastructure.
- Network electrification does not mean every train or station runs only on renewable energy.
- Route kilometres and track kilometres are different measures.
MCQ 1
Railway electrification most directly reduces dependence on:
- A. Diesel traction
- B. Signalling systems
- C. Passenger reservations
- D. Track maintenance
Reveal answerHide answer
A
Electric traction replaces diesel locomotion on equipped routes, though electricity may still come from mixed sources.
MCQ 2
Consider the following statements:
- Route electrification and renewable electricity share are identical indicators.
- The source of grid electricity affects lifecycle emissions from electric rail.
- A. 1 only
- B. 2 only
- C. Both 1 and 2
- D. Neither 1 nor 2
Reveal answerHide answer
B
Electrification changes traction technology, while the generation mix determines much of its emissions profile.
Mains
Question, 10 marks, 150 words: Examine the economic and environmental case for railway electrification in India.
Approach:
- Explain traction efficiency and fuel-import effects.
- Discuss capacity, speed, maintenance, and emissions.
- Examine capital costs, grid supply, and residual diesel needs.
- Suggest renewable procurement, storage, and transparent outcome reporting.
