Lymphatic filariasis elimination campaign
One line
The Health Ministry launched a nationwide mass drug administration campaign in 12 endemic states, with a national goal of eliminating lymphatic filariasis as a public-health problem by 2027.
Summary
Lymphatic filariasis, commonly called elephantiasis, is a mosquito-borne neglected tropical disease that damages the lymphatic system. The campaign combines preventive medicines, transmission assessment, morbidity management, and community participation.
The release reported that 348 districts were endemic across 20 states and Union Territories. It also reported that some districts had stopped mass drug administration after transmission assessment, while others continued because transmission remained above the threshold.
PYQ pattern
UPSC health questions often test the disease-vector-intervention relationship. The likely pattern is to distinguish neglected tropical diseases, vector control, vaccination, and mass drug administration. Practise from the official UPSC archive.
Core notes
- Mass drug administration (MDA) gives preventive medicines to eligible populations, whether or not every person has symptoms.
- The disease can cause lymphoedema, hydrocele, disability, and stigma. Stopping transmission and caring for existing cases are separate needs.
- The female Culex mosquito was identified in the release as the vector for the Indian campaign context.
- Elimination requires high coverage, repeated rounds where needed, surveillance, safe water and sanitation, and long-term care.
Prelims lens
- LF is caused by filarial parasites and transmitted by mosquitoes. It is not a bacterial disease.
- MDA is a preventive population strategy, not individual treatment of only confirmed cases.
- A district may stop MDA after passing a transmission assessment. That is not the same as declaring every case cured.
MCQ 1
Consider the following statements about lymphatic filariasis:
- It can damage the lymphatic system.
- It is transmitted by mosquitoes.
- A. 1 only
- B. 2 only
- C. Both 1 and 2
- D. Neither 1 nor 2
Reveal answerHide answer
C
LF is a mosquito-borne parasitic disease that can lead to chronic lymphatic damage and disability.
MCQ 2
Mass drug administration is best understood as:
- A. preventive medicines offered to a population in an endemic area
- B. a one-time surgery for every infected person
- C. a vaccine given only to newborns
- D. a mosquito breeding programme
Reveal answerHide answer
A
MDA reduces the parasite reservoir and transmission when high coverage is achieved. It complements, but does not replace, case care and vector control.
Mains
Question, 10 marks, 150 words: What institutional and community conditions are needed to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public-health problem?
Approach:
- Define LF and distinguish transmission control from morbidity management.
- Explain MDA, transmission assessment, vector control, sanitation, and case care.
- Discuss missed populations, stigma, adherence, migrant mobility, and surveillance.
- Recommend local health workers, trusted communication, disability care, and data-led repeat campaigns.
