Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor reaches first criticality

The 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam attained first criticality, the start of a controlled fission chain reaction, on 6 April 2026.
Summary
The reactor is part of India's three-stage nuclear power programme. It uses uranium-plutonium mixed oxide fuel and a uranium-238 blanket that can breed fissile plutonium. The release also linked the design to future use of thorium and uranium-233.
First criticality is a major technical milestone, but it is not the same as commercial power generation. Testing, regulatory clearances, commissioning, and grid operation remain separate stages.
