Expanded QR traceability for medicines
One line
The Health Ministry expanded Schedule H2 to bring vaccines, antimicrobials, selected narcotic and psychotropic drugs, and anti-cancer medicines under QR-based track and trace.
Summary
The system is meant to let supply-chain participants authenticate products and trace batches. The QR code must carry nine data elements, including product identity, manufacturer, batch, manufacture and expiry dates, licence number, and excipients.
Traceability helps identify where a product entered or moved through the chain. It does not by itself prove that every product is clinically effective or that every counterfeit will be detected.
PYQ pattern
UPSC health questions often connect regulation, public health, and technology. Use the official UPSC archive and distinguish authentication, quality testing, pharmacovigilance, and antimicrobial stewardship.
Core notes
- Schedule H2 requires a bar code or QR code on specified drug packaging under the Drugs Rules, 1945.
- Track and trace supports authentication, recall, inventory visibility, and investigation.
- Antimicrobials need stewardship because misuse drives antimicrobial resistance.
- Drug quality also depends on manufacturing standards, testing, storage, distribution, and enforcement.
Prelims lens
- Schedule H2 is a regulatory category under the Drugs Rules, 1945.
- A QR code stores information that software can read. It is not the same as a clinical trial.
- Batch traceability is different from individual patient records.
MCQ 1
The expanded Schedule H2 framework covers:
- Vaccines and antimicrobials.
- Anti-cancer medicines.
- A. 1 only
- B. 2 only
- C. Both 1 and 2
- D. Neither 1 nor 2
Reveal answerHide answer
C
The amendment brought these categories, among others, under the expanded QR traceability framework.
MCQ 2
Which is a likely use of QR-based drug traceability?
- A. Authentication and batch tracking
- B. Automatic replacement of all drug testing
- C. Setting the fiscal deficit target
- D. Measuring rainfall
Reveal answerHide answer
A
Traceability helps authenticate and follow products through the supply chain. It complements, rather than replaces, quality testing and regulation.
Mains
Question, 10 marks, 150 words: How can digital traceability improve medicine safety, and what limitations must regulators address?
Approach:
- Explain Schedule H2, QR data, authentication, and batch tracking.
- Discuss counterfeit control, recalls, inventory, and public trust.
- Examine data integrity, small-pack constraints, cyber risk, compliance cost, and false assurance.
- Recommend interoperable systems, inspections, pharmacovigilance, public verification, and privacy safeguards.
