Twelve years of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana
One line
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana completed twelve years with 59.09 crore accounts reported as of 19 August 2026, while account usage and service quality remain the deeper inclusion test.
Summary
Financial inclusion can reduce the cost of receiving benefits, saving securely, making payments, and accessing formal finance. An account is enabling infrastructure, however, not proof that a household regularly transacts, receives suitable credit, or is protected from fraud and mis-selling.
PYQ pattern
UPSC often moves from access indicators to the quality of inclusion. Prepare the distinction between account ownership, usage, credit access, consumer protection, and financial capability.
Core notes
- The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is a national mission for access to banking, savings, remittance, credit, insurance, and pension services.
- An eligible person can open a Basic Savings Bank Deposit account through a bank branch or Bank Mitra without a mandatory minimum balance.
- The scheme links accounts with a RuPay debit card, Direct Benefit Transfer, and eligible insurance or overdraft facilities.
- The official release reported 59.09 crore accounts, deposits of Rs 3,16,514 crore, and 41.29 crore RuPay cards as of 19 August 2026.
- It also reported that women held 55.7 per cent of the accounts and rural or semi-urban centres accounted for 77.8 per cent.
- Evaluation should track active use, transaction reliability, grievance resolution, gendered control over accounts, financial literacy, and access to appropriate credit.
Prelims lens
- PMJDY accounts are Basic Savings Bank Deposit accounts and do not require a minimum balance.
- The scheme is associated with the JAM architecture of Jan Dhan accounts, Aadhaar, and mobile connectivity.
- An overdraft is credit subject to eligibility; it is not an unconditional grant.
- Direct Benefit Transfer is an application of account infrastructure, not the only purpose of PMJDY.

- Suggest usage-based indicators, customer protection, local support, interoperable payments, and gender-sensitive financial capability.
