C-DOT unveils quantum-safe communication products
One line
C-DOT unveiled 14 products spanning Quantum Key Distribution, Post-Quantum Cryptography, network encryption, and quantum communication components.
Summary
A sufficiently capable quantum computer could break widely used public-key systems. Governments and firms therefore need a planned migration to algorithms and key systems designed for the quantum era.
Quantum-safe is a design goal. A product announcement does not prove secure deployment, interoperability, or resistance to every attack.
PYQ pattern
UPSC can test the distinction among quantum computing, QKD, PQC, conventional encryption, and the National Quantum Mission. See the official UPSC question-paper archive.
Core notes
- The Centre for Development of Telematics is the telecom research and development centre of the Department of Telecommunications.
- Quantum Key Distribution, or QKD, uses quantum states to help two endpoints establish keys and detect interception attempts on the quantum channel.
- Post-Quantum Cryptography, or PQC, uses classical mathematical algorithms designed to resist attacks by quantum and conventional computers.
- QKD needs specialised physical links and devices. PQC can often be added to existing digital networks through software or conventional hardware.
- The product series includes fibre QKD systems, a single-photon detector, radio-frequency drivers, and encryptors for optical, wireless, enterprise, and defence networks.
- Several encryptors use algorithms standardised by the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology.
- Hybrid migration can combine classical and post-quantum methods while standards, hardware, and operating procedures mature.
Prelims lens
- QKD distributes or establishes cryptographic keys. It does not replace every encryption, identity, endpoint, or access-control function.
- PQC does not require a quantum computer to run.
- A single-photon detector is a component used in quantum communication.
- Measurement-device-independent QKD is designed to reduce risks from compromised measurement equipment.
- C-DOT works under the Ministry of Communications, not the Department of Atomic Energy.
MCQ 1
Which one of the following correctly distinguishes QKD from PQC?
- A. QKD uses quantum communication for key establishment, while PQC uses classical algorithms designed to resist quantum attacks
- B. QKD is a classical password rule, while PQC requires a quantum satellite in every case
- C. QKD encrypts all stored data, while PQC only detects fibre cuts
- D. There is no technical difference between them
Reveal answerHide answer
A
QKD and PQC address the quantum threat in different ways. PQC can run on conventional systems, while QKD uses quantum states and specialised communication equipment.
MCQ 2
Consider the following statements about the C-DOT product announcement:
- It included single-photon detection hardware.
- It included encryptors that use post-quantum algorithms.
- It established that every Indian telecom network had completed quantum-safe migration.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
- A. 1 and 2 only
- B. 2 and 3 only
- C. 1 and 3 only
- D. 1, 2 and 3
Reveal answerHide answer
A
The product series covered both components and deployable systems. A launch does not establish nationwide migration.
Mains
Question, 10 marks, 150 words: What should guide India's migration towards quantum-safe public communication networks?
Approach:
- Explain the threat to present public-key cryptography.
- Distinguish QKD, PQC, and hybrid migration.
- Examine legacy equipment, cost, standards, interoperability, key management, and false claims of complete security.
- Recommend asset inventories, cryptographic agility, open testing, phased procurement, and independent security evaluation.
