MoSPI tests a monthly services production index
One line
MoSPI released experimental June 2026 production indices for 19 service sub-sectors with 2024-25 as the base year.
Summary
Services form the largest part of India's economy, yet monthly output is harder to measure than factory production. A regular volume index can fill an important data gap between high-frequency indicators and quarterly national accounts.
The series is experimental. It should not be treated as a final, economy-wide services index.
PYQ pattern
UPSC can compare the Index of Services Production with IIP, GDP, Consumer Price Index, and Purchasing Managers' Index measures. See the official UPSC question-paper archive.
Core notes
- The release covers wholesale and retail trade, transport, telecom, banking, insurance, real estate, information technology, professional services, and other activities.
- An index value compares measured production with the base-year reference of 100. It is not the same as a growth rate.
- June 2026 year-on-year growth ranged from 24.7 per cent in real estate to minus 6.0 per cent in air transport.
- The published sub-sector series do not create one headline aggregate for all services.
- MoSPI labels the series a trial so it can test data quality, resilience, and user feedback.
- Railway, banking, and insurance indices use provisional monthly data and may be revised annually.
- A production index aims to track output volume. It is not a services price index or a measure of sector profits.
Prelims lens
- The trial Index of Services Production uses 2024-25 as base year.
- It covers 19 sub-sectors, not every service in the economy.
- Year-on-year growth compares June 2026 with June 2025.
- An index of 120 means the measured level is 20 per cent above the base reference, not that output grew 120 per cent in a month.
- Experimental status signals that methods and series may change after testing.

- A. 1 and 2 only
- B. 2 and 3 only
- C. 1 and 3 only
- D. 1, 2 and 3
